Nationality Breakdown of my Known Clients in my Emule P2P File Sharing - 2006-08-29

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

The dominant theme of this batch of downloads are DVD movies of the late 80s to mid 90s. I am tempsharing several christian texts, most revolving around the book of revelation and the rapture, tribulation, trumpets and stuff. The LightHouse publishing ones are Jahova’s Witness I think.

  • Original Rules

  • (1) A ???planet??? is a celestial body that:
    • (a) is in orbit around the sun
    • (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape
    • (c) has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.
  • (2) A ???dwarf planet??? is a celestial body that:
    • (a) is in orbit around the sun
    • (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape
    • (c) has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit
    • (d) is not a satellite
  • (3) All other objects, except satellites, orbiting the sun shall be referred to collectively as ???Small Solar-System Bodies.???
  • My opinion

I agree with booting out pluto, stripping its ‘full planet’ label, but not why. Put mercury in pluto’s position, and it isn’t going to clear out it’s orbit of comet-crap either. Mercury got that for free from the stronger solar wind because of it’s close orbit. I think it should be the ability to retain a carbon dioxide atmosphere at a specific black-body temperature, whether earth’s, a nice round number, the snow-line (as defined by GURPS Space - distance from the star at which water ice could exist during planetary formation), or at the ‘outer limit’ of 40AU (as defined by GURPS Space - Pluto-Centric). This min-RMM / MMWR criteria is also assuming that the atmosphere never freezes way out there in the outer reaches of the solar system.

    Revised Rules

  • (1) A ???planet??? is a celestial body that:
    • (a) is in orbit around the sun
    • (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape (I would like to see some numerical boundaries for this, probably a function of radius and density)
    • (c) Has a MMWR (Minimum Molecular Weight Retained) of 44 or less (Retains Carbon Dioxide molecules over geological time) at a black-body temperature of 275 degrees Kelvin.
  • (2) A ???dwarf planet??? or planetoid is a celestial body that:
    • (a) is in orbit around the sun
    • (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape (I would like to see some numerical boundaries for this, probably a function of radius and density)
    • (c) Has a MMWR (Minimum Molecular Weight Retained) of over 44 (Does not retain Carbon Dioxide molecules over geological time) at a black-body temperature of 275 degrees Kelvin.
    • (d) is not a satellite
  • (3) All other objects, except satellites, orbiting the sun shall be referred to collectively as ???Small Solar-System Bodies -?a asteroids, comets, space junk..???

Algebra for converting the GURPs Space 4th Ed MMWR formula:
W=MMWR, B=BlackBody Temperature, D=Diameter or Radius in ratio of earth, K=Density in ratio of earth

    W = B/(60 x D^2 x K)
    W/B=1/(60 X D^2 x K)
    B/W=60 X D^2 x K
    B / W / 60 = D^2 x K

    Carbon Dioxide has a RMM (real molar-mass) / molecular weight of 44 - Carbon-12 + 2 x Oxygen-16 and Sulfur Dioxide has a RMM of 64 - Sulfur-32 + 2 x Oxygen-16.

     Retain RMM 64 (Sulfur Dioxide) @ Black-Body Temperature of 44K : Radius^2 * Density > 0.0114583333

    Retain RMM 44 (Carbon Dioxide) @ Black-Body Temperature of 300K : Radius^2 * Density > 0.1136363636 (1/8.8)

Radius (D) is in ratio of Earth’s Radius (Target Radius / Earth Radius) - I’m using radius instead of diameter.
Density (K) is in Ratio of Earth’s Radius (Target Density / Earth Density)

    Mercury D^2 x K — (2439.7/6378.137)^2 * (5.427/5.5153) = 0.1439712736
    Pluto D^2 x K — (1153/6378.137)^2 * (2.03/5.5153) = 0.012028122
    Ceres D^2 x K — (975/6378.137)^2 * (2.08/5.5153) = 0.0088128370262
    2003_UB313 (Xena) D^2 x K — (1200/6378.137)^2 * (2.03/5.5153) = 0.0130287186 (Using Pluto’s Density)
    2003_UB313 (Xena) D^2 x K — (1200/6378.137)^2 * (0.5) = 0.0176988403 (Using midpoint of 0.5 of density range for icy-core planets in GURPS Space 4th Ed Pg 85)

Planetary Stats are from the Wikipedia - Earth, Mercury, Pluto, 2003_UB313 (Xena), Ceres

  • Mercury passes EVERYTHING
  • Ceres fails EVERYTHING
  • Pluto and 2003_UB313 (Xena) with Pluto’s density fails everything except RMM 64 / Sulfur Dioxide at a blackbody temperature of 44K.
  • 2003_UB313 (Xena) with half of earth’s density passes both carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide at a black-body temperature of 44K, but nothing warmer.
  • ****************************************
Expansion of GURPS Space 4th Ed planet-size criteria (optional advanced rule) to accomodate the “Dwarf Planet” class

Size- Min- Max- Gas with atomic-
Category MMWR MMWR weight at max-MMWR
    Huge 0 2 Hydrogen (H2)
    Large 2 4 Helium (He2)
    Medium 4 18 Water Vapor (H2O)
    Small 18 28 Nitrogen (N2)
    Tiny 28 44 Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
    Planetoid / 44 0 None
    Dwarf Planet

for a planet to be considered a Gas Giant, it must be ‘Huge’ size (retains hydrogen) and more than 5% of the planet’s mass must be gas/atmosphere (StarGen rule, not GURPs Space).

This does not factor in a fixed black-body temperature that I would want used in the criteria of Planet vs Dwarf-Planet in real life. It just expands the rules of the GURPS Space RPG for the new astronomical happenings. Some of the excerpts below (both the standard and advanced rules section) show that GURPs Space physical size barriers vary by both blackbody temperature and density.

2003_UB313 (Xena) has a semi-major axis of about 67.67 AU, so at 67.67 AU from the sun, it has a black-body temperature of 33.79K, which at that temperature, a D^2 x K of 0.0127992424 or more is needed to retain Carbon Dioxide. Pluto (D^2*K=0.012028122) fail to reach this number, it is still a dwarf planet / planetoid even on a non-fixed black-body temperature based MMWR/44 requirement. 2003_UB313 (Xena) (Pluto’s Density Assumed; D^2*K=0.0130287186), however does pass, so at 2003_UB313 (Xena) with Pluto’s Density assumed qualifies as a Tiny planet under this expanded GURPs Space size categorization system, because it will retain Carbon Dioxide over geological time at the mean orbital radius (I just used the semi-major axis from the Wikipedia as the mean orbital radius). That’s why I would prefer testing at a fixed black-body temperature.

    1/B^2=4.85/77284
    B^2=77284/4.85
    B=(77284/4.85)^0.5
    Blackbody temperature of the snow-line: 126.2332973538 K
Blackbody temperature of the snow-line (rounded to nearest 0.25): 126.25 K

As you can see, GURPS Space rocks. It is very realistic, has hard physics formulas, and it still keeps that sci-fi feel, and it so does well in simplifying the math to a Junior-High 7th-9th grade level, mostly by converting all the units of measurement to ratios vs Earth or the Sun.

    Get GURPS Space

    GURPS Space 4th Edition Page 108 — Placing a Pre-Designed World

If a world has already been designed for the star system using the basic world-building sequence in Chapter 4, then that world should also be placed at a specific distance from one of the stars in the system.

The exact orbital radius for the predesigned world depends on the luminosity of its primary star (as generated in Step 18) and the world???s blackbody temperature (as generated in Step 5). Use the following formula:

    R = (77,300/B^2) x square root of L

Here, R is the orbital radius in AU, B is the world???s blackbody temperature, and L is the star???s luminosity in solar units. Compute this orbital radius for each of the stars, and choose one of them to be the predesigned world???s primary.

Note that the proper distance may fall inside the inner limit radius, outside the outer limit radius, or within a forbidden zone for a given star. In this case, the world cannot be placed in orbit around that star.

It???s also possible for the predesigned world to end up being too close to the star???s first gas giant, if any. Determine the ratio between the two worlds??? orbital radii, by dividing the larger radius by the smaller. If the ratio is less than 1.4, then the two worlds are too close together ??C the gas giant???s gravitational influence will tend to make the pre-designed world???s orbit unstable. The pre-designed world cannot be placed in orbit around that star.

Given these two restrictions, it???s possible for a pre-designed world to have no place to go. If this happens, consider returning to Step 15 to generate a new star or set of stars to fit, or choosing a different arrangement of gas giants for one or more of the stars.

    ****************************************
GURPS Space 4th Edition Page 84 — Determining Blackbody Temperature

Another parameter related to a world???s climate is its blackbody temperature. This is the average surface temperature the world would have if it were an ideal blackbody, a perfect absorber and radiator of heat. Of course, real worlds are not ideal blackbodies, so the blackbody temperature is usually different from the world???s average surface temperature.

    ****************************************
GURPS Space 4th Edition Page 113 — Blackbody Temperature

First, the blackbody temperature (p. 84) must be computed for each world. Use the following formula:

    B = 278 x (fourth root of L)/(square root of R)

Here, B is the blackbody temperature in kelvins, L is the primary star???s luminosity in solar units, and R is the average orbital radius of the world (or of the planet of which the world is a moon). Note that the blackbody temperature will be the same for a planet and for all of its moons. Record the blackbody temperature for each world, rounded to the nearest kelvin.

    ****************************************
GURPS Space 4th Edition Page 85-86 — Diameter and Surface Gravity

Diameter and Surface Gravity Once the world???s density has been fixed, it is possible to determine its diameter and surface gravity. These two parameters are closely related ??C if you select the world???s diameter, that determines its surface gravity, and vice versa. The following rules will permit the GM to select these two parameters in either order.

Selecting World Diameter First: Refer to the Size Constraints Table for the world???s size class. Multiply square root of (B/K) (where B is the world???s blackbody temperature in kelvins, and K is the world???s density in units of Earth???s density) by the appropriate Minimum value from the table. The result is the minimum possible diameter for the world, expressed in multiples of Earth???s diameter. Similarly, multiply square root of (B/K) by the appropriate Maximum value from the table to get the maximum possible diameter for the world.

Select any value within this range for the diameter. To select a diameter at random, roll 2d-2, multiply by onetenth of the difference between the maximum and minimum diameter values, and add the result to the minimum value. Feel free to vary the final result by up to 5% of the difference, so long as the final value is within the range. To express any diameter in miles, multiply the value in Earth diameters by 7,930.

Once the diameter is known, use the following formula to get the world???s surface gravity:

    S = K x D

Here, S is the world???s surface gravity in Gs, K is the world???s density in units of Earth???s density, and D is the world???s diameter in Earth diameters.

GURPS Space 4th Edition Page 86 — Worlds Big and Little

When designing a world, it???s important to know what volatiles will be available at the world???s surface, defining the environment visitors will experience. Every world begins with a wide variety of volatiles, but some of these will be lost very early in the world???s history. The most common reason for such loss is the fact that molecules of a given volatile that are close to the top of the world???s atmosphere might reach escape velocity and head for deep space!

Molecules in a gas move at random speeds, and the distribution of those speeds is determined by the molecular weight of the gas and by the ambient temperature. Higher temperatures mean that the molecules tend to move faster ??C but the more massive molecules of a gas with high molecular weight will move more slowly at the same temperature. In effect, every world has a minimum molecular weight retained (MMWR) that indicates what volatile substances can be held onto across billion-year time scales. Volatiles with molecular weight higher than the MMWR will stay in the world???s atmosphere and on its surface. Volatiles with lower molecular weight will be lost to space in a relatively short time after the world is formed.

Factors that increase a world???s escape velocity all tend to lower the minimum molecular weight that can be retained. A more massive world will have a higher escape velocity. So will a denser world, even of the same mass.

On the other hand, the temperature at the top of the atmosphere is also critical; higher temperatures mean that more molecules will reach escape velocity. Thus two worlds can have the same MMWR despite being of different sizes, so long as the smaller one is colder. Steps 2-6 of the world design sequence are set up so that the GURPS GM doesn???t need to concern himself with the details of computing a world???s MMWR. Advanced world-builders may choose to work in a more free-form manner, selecting a world???s physical parameters as needed and then checking to make sure the result makes sense. In that case, the following formula may be of use:

    W = B/(60 x D^2 x K)

Here, W is the MMWR measured in units of molecular weight, B is the world???s blackbody temperature in kelvins, D is its diameter in Earth diameters, and K is its density in units of Earth???s density.

A world???s physical parameters will fit its selected World Type if its MMWR is legal for its size class. A Large world must have MMWR greater than 2, but less than or equal to 4. A Standard world must have MMWR greater than 4, but less than or equal to 18. A Small world must have MMWR greater than 18, but less than or equal to 28. A Tiny world must have MMWR greater than 28.

For comparison, some of the more important molecular weights are: hydrogen 2, helium 4, methane 16, ammonia 17, water vapor 18, neon 20, carbon monoxide 28, nitrogen 28, nitric oxide 30, oxygen 32, hydrogen sulfide 34, argon 40, and carbon dioxide 44.

GURPS Space 4th Edition Page 106 — Step 20: Locate Orbital Zones

    Inner Limit Radius

Planets will not form too close to a star. Even while a star is on the main sequence, a planet is very unlikely to form in a stable orbit within a certain distance. Once a star moves into the subgiant or giant phases of its evolution, existing planets that find themselves too close may be vaporized by the swollen star???s intense heat.

For each star in the target star system, compute the inner limit radius using both of the following formulae. The inner limit radius that applies will be the larger of the two values. For almost all stars on the main sequence, the first of the two formulae will be the one to apply ??C the second formula becomes dominant for extremely luminous stars.

    I = 0.1 x M
    I = 0.01 x square root of L

Here, I is the inner limit radius in AUs, Mis the star???s mass in solar units, and L is the star???s luminosity in solar units.

    Outer Limit Radius

Planets will also not form too far away from a star. At a large distance, orbital movements are leisurely. Protoplanets will have much less opportunity to sweep up matter before the star ignites and the process of planetary formation is halted.

For each star in the target star system, compute the outer limit radius

    using the following formula.

    O = 40 x M

Here, O is the outer limit radius in AUs and M is the star???s mass in solar units. Planets will be able to form anywhere between the inner and outer limit radii, so long as no other stars interfere with their gravitational influence.

    Snow Line

Next, compute the snow line radius for each star. This is the distance from the star at which water ice could exist during planetary formation, marking the most likely region for the formation of the star???s largest gas giant planet. The snow line radius can be found using the following formula:

    R = 4.85 x square root of L

Here, R is the snow line radius in AUs and L is the star???s initial luminosity on the main sequence (the L-Min value from the Stellar Evolution Table).

Gadgets for your Data / Multimedia Copying, Hoarding, Transport, and off-PC Indulgement needs

    Friday, August 25th, 2006

My hoard is actually relativitly small for a typical obsessed Emule or BitTorrent P2P hoarder, although all the ‘lining up’ and ’sorting’ that a typcial HFA does, manifests with me with my programs and multimedia files (it was blocks or cars when i was a kid). The hoard is still under 500GB. About 400GB with installed programs, 300GB without installed programs, and 180GB with niether installed programs or DVD-XVIDs. My external-drive capacity is 330GB on a pair of mirrored 250GB desktop drives and a pair of mirrored 80GB laptop drives. I also have 160GB in my Alienware laptop, which I have installed programs, and an additional copy of my non-DVD movies, Ebooks, RPG books, pictures, docs, Emulator-ROMs, and music.

I knew a few, non-autistic, hoarders who have hoards that are probably multiple terrabytes if they are still hoarding today. Half are porn hoarders the the rest relentlessly hoard warez and MP3s (and today, probably movies). Their MP3 hoards are several tens of gigabytes in 1998 and the warez hoard close to 100GB. My hoard is much smaller, and much much much more organized than these peoples’ hoards. My hoard was a meeger 3GB in 1998 (First MP3s, lots of Pictures and Emulation ROMs), 8GB in 2000 (mostly pictures and ROMs), 40GB in 2002 (huge picture influx), 140GB in 2004 (HUMUNGOUS non-DVD movie, E-Book, and RPG-Book influx), and 300GB today (major growth in DVDs and MP3s and steady growth everywhere else).

I am outgrowing my external hard drives so I went shopping (just did shopping, didn’t buy anything yet). Plus my cat knocked over one my external desktop drives (Western Digital) and it died a slow death over two days (surface scanning / finding bad sectors until it died and froze the machine and became unaccessable & making funny noices after rebooting). It fell down a foot from ontop two external DVD burners and the other external desktop drive, while it was on, landing on the bottom, upright. Desktop drives are far more senstive than laptop drives. A laptop drive (Hitatchi) survived a 3 foot drop from desk to floor, while on, impacting on the corner of the case, and survived with no bad sectors.

I can’t handle loss of my hoard as well as the other, non-autsitic hoarders that I know. These people happilly start over and hoard faster than ever before. I have a much harder letting go of things and I rigorously back up and duplicate my hoard, even though I know that at least 2/3 of it I can re-download from Emule (most of the other third are from the web), but it took for ever organizing it and I can’t remember everything because I’m not blessed with autism-cooperative photographic memory like Rain-Main. Emule has much better longevity than BitTorrent from Torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay, about the same as a legal intellectual or small-business web site, if the releaser can get it to at least 10, 20, or 30 complete sources, depending on the leech-factor (high for christian stuff and non-niche legal files, low for niche pirated items, in-between for nich legal items and mainstream piracy) and file size (large files stay on a little longer usually)

  • MeritLine - Apacer Disc Steno CP200 Combo USB 2.0 CD/CD-RW Drive & Memory Card Reader Combo - Travellers Must-Have
  • Apacer Discontinued this :( . If it was full USB-OTG compliant I would buy this in a hot second. A battery powered USB-OTG DVD burner will let you spew out dozens of copies from any USB device within minutes or hours from any other USB device (depending on how much you fill the DVD) without a PC. Unfortunately this doesn’t do USB-OTG. It came out a few months before I heard of USB-OTG. This can play DVD movies to TV though. It has limited USB-OTG-like connectivity to the built in card-reader, pictBridge printers and some JVC camcorders. So it may be good for photographers who are Area 51 watchers, or those watching that new speculated Area 51 replacement in Utah.

The second link is the model I bought 3 years ago. I gave it to my mother to use as an external DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive to an old laptop becuase I wasn’t using the no-PC DigiCam/Memory Card to CD burn feature that much. It is only usefull only if you needed to really spin out copies rapidly in the field from digital camera sources. Otherwise the Hard Drive versions are more convenient, though I would buy another DVD-burner version like the CP-300 if it were full USB-OTG compliant and kept the DVD-play to TV and the Li-ION battery.

Then add playing DVD movies to the A/V outputs and playing media files (MPEG 1/2, XVID, DivX, MP3, WMA, AC3, JPG, PNG) off of the hard drive or off of a burned DVD-ROM, all without a PC. $150 plus cost of 2.5″ hard drive and slimline laptop DVD burner looks like a good price.

  • MemoryLabs is still far cheaper than MeritLine on Hard Drives and DVD Burners. Be sure to Pick the Airborne@Home Standard Ground shipping option instead of FedEx-Saver (Default) or FedEx Ground. Memorylabs rips off on shipping from the uninformed. Smart people can find out on their own, and MemroyLabs is losing much ground on the price war on anything thats not a Hard Drive or DVD Burner, so i’m giving out the pseudo-secret now. It is $27 (Airborne@Home) vs $70-80 (FedEx Saver, FedEx Ground) for 2 bare 3.5″ hard drives and 2 bare 2.5″ hard drives. MemroyLabs also sells a lot of CPUs and SuperMicro MoBos. I havn’t price-compared on CPUs or Mobos. But MemroyLabs is flopping (expensive) on prices for DVD/CD media, flash memory, hard drive enclosures, Memory Cards, and MP3 gadgets. But they are defintly killer deals for bulk-packaged (no box) bare-OEM hard drives and DVD burners, as long as you pick the ‘Airborne@Home’ shipping to not get ripped off there. I learned of MemoryLabs from a fan that was waiting to meet some of the San Jose EarthQuake players (MLS; probably just to get autographs really) he knew at the Spartan Stadium. MemoryLabs is based in San Jose, CA. Airborne@Home Ground ships to Pheonix AZ in 2 days, and I’ve never had any defective products from this site (yet).

I’m prety indifferent now, though, because the product description does not specify how the drives in the enclosure will get their power, and whether or not there are any fans (some plastic 5.25″ single-drive enclosures have fans), since it is a plastic enclosure.

  • Tenergy / All-Battery - - 750mah 3.7v AA-size 14500 Li-Ion cylindrical Cell
  • Who says Lithium Ion is currently higher-density than NIMH? 3.7 volts * 0.75 amp-hours =2.775 watt-hours for the Lithium-Ion AA-size cell, and 1.2 volts * 2.7 amp-hours = 3.24 watt-hours. Lithium Ion is much more sensitive to overcharging and short-circuiting and ignite (Li-Ion) instead of leak or burst (NIMH) when it does get too overcharged or short ciruited, and MIMH can use more basic simple microprocessor chargers, and NIMH is not toxic waste when thrown out. The only issue is that you will need 12 or 13 cells to power a decent laptop, but you at least won’t need multiple banks of them to provide the capacity. A 12-cell NIMH battery pack will outlast a 12-cell Li-Ion battery pack, but you need a minium of 12 cells, which is why vendors prefer Li-Ion. Its not the power density, but the minium volume reqired to provide the needed voltage, especially for very portable laptops and small consumer electronics. My Nikon CoolPix 8800 cammera runs conitunously for a little over 2 hours on 6 AA NIMH (older 2100mah) but a 750mah Lithium-ion (2 14500 cells 7.4v) will last only about 45 minutes. When I get those 2700mah I probably will approach or hit 3-hours of continous operation (I am using the discontinued and overpriced AA module addon). Hopefully the Silver and Zinc-Matrix batteries that are coming out in a few years will make both Li-Ion and NIMH batteries obsolote. For for the meantime I think all the big 14.7v gaming laptops (Alienware Area51m-7000, Dell XPS) that use 12 or 16 cell Li-Ion batteries or 8-Cell laptops that could adapt to using a larger 12-cell battery should switch to NIMH, because it is denser than Li-Ion, just a higher minimum volume to attain a certain voltage.

  • Wikipedia - USB - FireWire Section
  • So, Apple’s Intellectual Property tyrrany has made it difficult for FireWire to compete with USB on price??? Oh well. USB isn’t that inferior. Hopefully Blu-Ray won’t make the same mistake, because HD-DVD is more inferior than blue-ray than USB is than FireWire. My Alienware laptop has 2 firewire ports, but I have never used them. I wonder if one can burn DVDs on an external burner over 4x without kicking in the buffer underrun protection? My laptop hard drive can burn 8x to an internal burner, but not 16x. But 4x as a full PC-side buffer, but the Burner’s buffer runs out. Unfortunatly, firewire enclosures cost 25% more than USB ones, partly because of Apple IP tyrrany, so I probably will never know.

The RIAA’s Settlement Support Center & Settlement Hotline

    Thursday, August 24th, 2006
  • P2PNet - New RIAA p2p blunder
  • Hiring a “professional systems expert” when only a collections agency like company called ‘Settlement Support Center’ - is calling you is way too much money and effort that is only wasted. It means ’sucker’ to the rep. Easy commission. Guilty or not (especially when not guilty because of the fear tactics), throw all letters in the garbage, and ignore all calls with unknown or no-number on the caller-id.

The Settlement Support Center is obviously a type of company who buys lawsuits off of other people and litigates them in their behalf. If the Settlement Support center paid the RIAA $2500 for the lawsuit, then $3750 is a 50% profit for the “Settlement Support Center” collections agency. Being in a no or little garnishment state such as no car or used car with a lien (private-party is better), and being a renter, not owning stocks, bonds, no savings accounts, no IRA / 401K (these are very difficult to garnish but it can be done), and not being a too valued employee is very helpful, but for under $5000, an actual court summons is highly unlikely, at least in Arizona unless they can get it filed as small-claims because of the expenses involved.

Having unresolved ambiguous mailing addresses on your credit due to attempted, but unsuccessful identity theft attempts seems to help too. My background check is two addresses out of date because I’m too lazy to do any of the forwarding and updating stuff and it greatly cuts my junk mail down (I update my credit cards so it does go on my credit). My ambiguous address on my credit report from 2 of the 3 credit bureaus, which is actually listed as current with both, is actually to a former hammer / shot-put star in AZUSA, CA, which is probably more creditor-botchup than attempted identity theft. If you got weird crap on your credit but no weird accounts or unexplained derogatory items (from non-credit defaultings from services granted on the false identity such as apartment rental), don’t bother to fix it, as long as you don’t need significant credit (car loan, mortgage).

Guilt or innocence doesn’t mean anything to these people.? They bought a case from the RIAA, and they expect a profit, and they are getting profits, so far, with typical fear tactics and harassment.? This is despite the only evidence being offered are ip address and filename pairs from outsourced services NetSentry or BayTSP. If you refuse on the phone, you are going to court.? If you ignore calls and letters, you only ‘might’ go to court, and if you are ungarnishable, you can even ditch the summons!!

  • ‘The pyramid of Internet piracy’ isn’t that good. CAMs go to bootleggers more. The release groups prefer DVD screeners though they are hard to come by now. Release groups hate the P2P networks, though many of their couriers leak. Some of the CAMers will release directly to P2P networks. Emule and Gnutella (BearShare, LimeWire) don’t need any of the facilitator sites though most curry-leaks go to BitTorrent first and then transfer to Emule via the multi-network clients like Shareaza and MLDonkey. Emule may be slower to get content but I’m not very up to date on the outside world anyway and if I happen to be up to date, then I’m patient becuase I like Emule’s robustness and file-longevity.

  • I’ve used lyrics sites to predominiately find a title & album for a song i’ve heard on the radio and remember only highly repeated lyrics for so I can search for it on Emule. Lyric sites reveal some distrubing lyrics from songs that appear pretty ok at the surface. A lot of the songs I like are self esteem lowering songs (by example, not by attack), especially Hurt, Smashing Pumpkins, and Linkin Park. Also, Hurt is a bit anti-God in the same way that Soulfly is a bit pro-God. Wanting to ban lyric sites is mostly a power and control thing with a higher emphasis on greed.

  • P2PNet - Concealed Carry music
  • Hey, the law could get this bad. “Close down the instrument stores, I say! Make sure all music teachers have the appropriate licenses for the music they’re teaching their students! And make sure they’re buying only legit sheet music from sources known and recognized by the NMPA, and MPA! AND, force musical instrument owners to get a Concealed Carry license to ensure they’re qualified to carry and play an instrument in public, and are aware of the laws for failing to do so. (Venue must have ASCAP/BMI/SEASAC licenses, etc.)”. Now expand this to PCs, VCRs, DVD players, portable music and video players, …. Look out how the gun laws have progressed, especially in California in the 70s. First its registration, then its a ban or a difficult to get license (registration or permits are easy and free or very cheap, licenses have a lot of red tape and can be very expensive). Registration will mark you for enhance enforcement of a further ban or more resitrictive licensing. Lets not bother if they try to do this to computers or instruments.

  • TorrentFreak - Bill Gates a pirate?
  • The file was ‘grey’. It violated copyright, but it isn’t sold in mainstream stores. Not catch him downloading ‘Pirates of the Carribean’ or something. It is difficult to be legal even with the grey areas (abandonware, advertising, homemade, small-timer, no-cost access public space like the web) though. Imagine having to pay for and possibly having to negotiate a license for EVERYTHING. Hopefully the copying and sharing technology will keep several steps ahead of regulation and enforcement technology.

It might be better to just self-publish, possibly in violation of the contract. The Indie Record Company, Flowerburger Records got banned for attacking the BPI (RIAA)’s sue em’ all campaign and generally supporting P2P file sharing, which sucks. Screw the RIAA and BPI. I don’t know what it means to have your small-time label banned from the RIAA or BPI. With Emule and the Internet in general it shouldn’t matter, as the advertising dollars were limited anyway.

  • Ars Technica - Digitizing video signals might violate the DMCA
  • P2PNet - The Macrovision albatross
  • Electronic Frontier Foundation EFF - Another DMCA Misuse: Macrovision v. Sima
  • I would consider Macrovision’s analog copy protection (ACP) that puts noise in the vertical blank interval of analog signals as a copy protection measure, but it looks like the DMCA excludes analog copy protection from ‘technical protection measures’, which means an exploitable loophole, Especially since ACP provides very little protection against digital ripping/copying. I say Just release the ACP-defeater as open source onto the internet and who gives a damn about the law or any stupid loopholes. Open Source in itself is an exploit of the foundation of civil tort law, though it wasn’t designed as such, but it just happens to be one because of its non-profit nature makes the individual(s) or organization(s) difficult to sue and collect, and its source-inclusion and viral-share alike makes the possible infringments difficult to contain.

  • DefectiveByDesign.org - Consumers happily pay more for DRM free tracks
  • I would pay more for no-DRM. Not THAT much more, THAT much being more than the brick and mortar version of the product, which for Itunes, it is already the same for DRM-ed versions. If its THAT much more, then i just turn to Emule. I happily pay the dead-tree price for a non-DRM ebook PDF, foregoing a 30-50% discounted price of the DRM competitors. One should analyze the P2P networks for piracy rates of a super-set combination of physical product supply and availability of non_DRM digital. None, difficult/short, common X None, DRM, No-DRM for a total of 9 combinations (No paper book because its banned, DRM-only PDF, Paper book plentiful, no PDF, Paper book plentiful, No-DRM PDF, etc…. I already see the difference with Steve Jackson Games books. Plentiful paper book supply + No_DRM PDFs = less sources on Emule. Supply shortages on the paper books GREATLY increases piracy (by # of sources on Emule) though. Somebody should do something more through and on more product types (Music by type, Movies by genre, etc…)

  • Judge to EchoStar: Disable your DVRs
  • I hate patents. There probably wasn’t even any reverse-engineering of TIVO hardware or code. I won’t miss Dish Network’s DVRs going away. My Dish-DVR’s hard drive crashed in late 2002. Now they want $5 per month for a service charge to work on program guide data that is already streamed for free. I am unwilling to pay it because TIVO has much better DVR software than Dish / Echostar in their DVR boxes (My TIVO’s modem broke in early 2002 though). I have a custom PC driven DVR system where I can copy and back up my TV shows and it will never listen to broadcast flags.

  • P2PNet - iPod sweat-shop accusation

  • BBC - Apple admits excessive iPod hours
  • Apple - Report on iPod Manufacturing
  • Well, It looks like Apple runs sweatshops too… And like Nike and Rebok, the Manufacturing is outsourced and the management has little control over standards outside of remote institutional policies. At least it appears that no childeren are being used in the sweatshop and that the violations are no where near as bad as Nike. An Ipod Sweatshop is just one of the better, more sanitary, less abusive ones. The sweatshop mostly employs desparate rural women working 15 hour shifts and paying 65-75% taxes (50% is room & board) out of their probably $2/hr wages in a corporate-socialist environment. I’m guessing the taxes are in the form of the ‘allowance’ portions of their wages. Apple’s policies are 12 hrs per day, 6 days per week, which is way long for many american jobs. But not Jobing IT, Graphics, and TV, and especially, Electronic Arts. But at least, if talented enough, you don’t get busted for refusing and resisting the hours, which the expectation is 50min, 60rms, 80peak usually, but is expressed as do what it takes to get it done, but it is still better than this iPod sweatshop. Most of the overtime at the Ipod sweatshop seemed voluntary and most of the volunteering was driven by the low wage (40 hrs/wk cannot pay the family’s bills even at a relativitly low standard of living), which was at the low, local minimum wage.

  • Until they start having legal home-invasions for colelctions/reposession, the best way to avoid post-judgment garnishment without giving it all away is to buy expensive toys that don’t need legal registration (computers, home theater, DVD factories, etc..), assuming you are an apartment renter and not a homeowner, otherwise they’ll probably reposess the stuff when they reposess the house unless you can move it all out pretty quickly. Also address/identity ambiguity on your credit report helps too (attempted identity theft or identity confusion with somebody with same first+last name), as long as their is no unrecognized accounts also. Private-party liens from buying stuff from family members having them let you make payments but put a lien on the title incase you wreck the car or default on the loan seem to provide some red-tape barrier protection for 4-figures collections amounts. The probably with ditching court is that if you don’t bother showing up, the plaintiff can pull complete bullshit out of their ass and they will get a default judgement no matter what the amount. Judgements clear the way to garnishments, not summonses, threat letters, or threatening phone calls from paralegals. Usually its 2-4 weeks between judgement and the first garnishment orders (wages, bank accounts, non-exempt assets like cars+houses+boats+investments+commodities). If the collections amount is under 20-50K and you rent and don’t own a car or any investments (probably 1 in 4 people in the USA), you’re not very sueable. If its more than 20-50K then you will only be able to live like an illegal immigrant - under the table work (easier in the east coast) and cash-only spending.

At least FBIs too busy with terrorists will be too bothered with file sharers and warez groups (but hopefully they’ll have some time for the selling bootleggers / counterfeiters) and leave the RIAA and MPAA to their defective outsourced lawsuit compaigns.

The lawsuit campaigns work by using outsourced detectives like netsentry to spider for evidence, then the evidence, often only filename / ip address pairs, is sold to paralegal-heavy law-firm empowered collections agencies, probably for $2000 each. These cases have a high enough fear-tactic settlement ratio for this thing to be profitable for the collections agency to buy more cases from the RIAA. There are plenty of commercials on day-time TV that summer-vacation couch potato kids and the unemployed / disabled / retired would see that show companies that will buy your litigation claim and pay you a highly discounted sum up front with no obligation for victory. The main way that you actually personally be a victim of one of these collection outside a file share suit is a defaulted debt over $1000, but probably less than $10,000.

I think I would support a ban of non-handfree cellphones, espcially for stick-shift drivers, and let it be an add-on charge for other stops (speeding, swerving, etc..), like how most seat-belt laws are enforced. They won’t stop you for no-seat belt, but if you’re stopped for speeding without a seat belt buckled, it’s an extra $50-100 fine on top of the speeding ticket. What’s worse than driving drunk or on a cellphone is driving while struggling to stay awake. Very bad.

Then at the very least you can have your best friend in the nuthouse with you, but more likely you’ll be more confident for yourself that you did not hallucinate or imagine the vision or apporation (those others may think you did), even if it is the devil.

  • Pravda - Chinese gays are no longer mentally diseased but still not welcomed in army
  • Hey they check their but-holes for actual anal-sexual activity. Not it only helps find the ones hiding their homosexuality, but it finds the one who don’t mind calling themselves faggots to dodge the chinese draft, which appears to be continual. I wouldn’t mind being a called a fag do dodge a draft into Iraq. There are 3 types of gays - The genuines, the high-libido bisexuals, and the disillusioned. I know one possibly genuine gay. Committed gay relationship. Don’t know if they have any oral or anal sex though. Know three kids who call themselves gay but are actually bi-sexual, because they do prefer women. But since they have to screw everyday and can’t get a woman everyday and seem unwilling to use prostitutes, they frequently masturbate each other and have oral sex. Then there are people who only think they are gay but have never done anything sexual with another person of the same sex. They may just be overly snuggly and be close friends, but no sex or hardcore pre-sexual romantic-necking. With a 7:1 to 20:1 male to female ratio in chinese cities, It is safe to assume that most chinese gays are of the ‘high-libido bisexual’ category. I wonder what happens to most of the chinese female childeren to create such a 7:1 to 20:1 male bias anyway? Abortions, abandonment, murder? Makes sense why they ban women and gays - sexual activity and excessive romance can comprimise dicsipline.

  • Dell seems to be recalling so many batteries and power supplies lately… I hope it isn’t the end of the 4-6 hour charge up of 2 batteries (14.7V 4400mah) with the machine on (Inspiron 8000-8200). My Alienware Area-51 7700 takes 4-6 hourse to charge 1 battery (14.7V 6600 mah) with the machine off, 8-10 hours with te machine on and relativitly idle, and doesn’t charge at all if i’m playing games or running BOINC / Grid Computing. Maybe its retalliation for Sony’s proposed nasty PlayStation-3 DRM?? That’s a wild speculation though.

Put $200 on a SRP M-Power card, disney card, food card, etc.., clone it out, spend the money, copy your cloned image back in, and you got $200 in free money again. Like those Game Genie codes that make your money never go down (you have to have enough to buy it but you never actually ’spend it’).

  • Kind of late. Din’t know they busted Winny’s author. It was taken over by someone else despite being closed-source. • P2PNet - Sweden Pirate Party’s Relakks
  • Relakks Home Page

  • Looks like a partnership and not ownership to me. Relakks looks like a simple IP-proxy that can be used on all internet protocols (including file-sharing like Emule and BitTorrent) and not just web/http (Like Proxydom or FirewallDown, which are free but ad-filled). No encryption. Looks like the Pirate Bay (or the whole trio - piratbyran, Pirate Party Sweden / piratpartiet, The Pirate Bay) ran up too much credit card debt recovering from their police raid. If you are that paranoid, switch to a Friend2Friend darkent like waste or use Freenet (which requires friends too get in but usually can get away with non-hostile acquaintances and the secrecy burden is lower). I think it reduces the Pirate Party Sweden’s credibility though.

  • The future is OFF
  • OFF System Development
  • P2PNet - OFF - is it real?
  • Looks like it chunks down a file into 128kb blocks and then mashed and encrypted (one-time cipher-pad) with other 128kb blocks from other files that you have inserted into the file-system image, twice — (orginal XOR RandomA) XOR RandomB. I wonder how is one to file-share these? Looks like it only works by putting in a few dozen of my own files and then shipping the entire image to my warez-friend? Looks more useful for closed-network currying of multiple-file packages, most likely by warez groups but probably also general paranoid communication and espionage, than for open file sharing.

P2P File Sharing News Comments 2006-08-15 - RIAA

    Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

Soooo much RIAA stuff this week I had to break the P2P News comments into two posts, and the RIAA section is still too large.

  • P2PNet - RIAA attacks Vietnam vet

  • BoingBoing - RIAA to grieving family: We depose your children in 60 days
  • Pike & Fischer - PDF of RIAA request for 60-day stay court document
  • The RIAA’s target is too dead to sue so they sue the family instead… Guessing disposition or depose means taking their inheritance or maybe they are inheriting his ‘liabilities’. The IRS does this with deceased and wounded Iraq-War vets too.

  • P2PNet - RIAA goes fishing
  • P2PNet - New RIAA p2p file-share victims
  • P2PNet - RIAA sues dead woman
  • SeattlePI Family owes $4,080 for music downloads
  • The RIAA is sueing Iraq servicemen too… Dead Grandmothers…. Some other new victims as well. Noticed that many use kazaa and most are techno-noobs and many of the non-ignorant are bad leechers (Emule / Incoming files always shared). If you can’t pay your settlement they have go through with the lawsuit and get a judgement. Without the lawsuit, it will only show up as a derogetory item for the (collections account for the settlement amount as if you stopped paying your cell-phone bill and let it go to collections) on your credit, which is usually a good 20+ point dock off your credit score.

    ****************************************

  • P2PNet - Kazaa vs Morpheus
  • Yahoo Finance - StreamCast to Face Court Over Patent Piracy
  • I hate patents. Now that the RIAA has some puppet strings into Sharman Networks (Kazaa) and their partnerships, they are hesitating to use the advantage to their own cruel ends. I won’t miss Morpheus that much though. Shareaza is a much better multi-network client (ED2K, Gnutella, BitTorrent). Got MLDonkey too. Both are Open Source.

  • Recording Industry vs The People - Tanya Andersen Case Heats Up. RIAA Seeks Dismissal of Counterclaims. Tanya Seeks Dismissal of RIAA’s Complaint.
  • The RIAA is trying to reduce costs on their ’sue them all’ campaign. Only problem is that they are as bad as that Henry Conn lawyer (actually his team of paralegal collections staff) with the extra threats and harrassment. Thats why they are being nailed for racketeering. Lawsuits that are not small claims are expensive, at least in Arizona they are. Victory feasability and also Garnishment feasability research is even more expensive and often requires pseudo-legal inquiries in such as ‘marketing’ credit report inqueries. It is far easier to just threaten and scare and most people fall for it. It appears that the lawyers/agencies behind RIAA lawsuits are working very similar to written-off credit card debt collection in workings. The number of written off credit card accounts is just too overwhelming to straightly and directly ’sue em all’, and it appears much more so for music downloaders with the RIAA. The RIAA probably finds the ‘evidence’ and sells it to thrid-party collections agencies. Works just like them credit cards. And it don’t matter whether you’re guilty or innocent (I had 1x guilty - MBNA - 1x innocent - Discover - already paid a different agency, possibly a fraud).

  • P2PNet - File sharing, p2p criminals
  • The Village Voice - Meet John Doe The RIAA runs its lawsuits as a volume business, and sometimes downloaders just gotta settle
  • The fact that a simple IP blocker can work wonders in keeping a RIAA lawsuit at bay shows that the RIAA’s sue em’ all campaign is largely a bulk automated process as these articles say. The RIAA uses fake servers and automated spider bots that download files from users. To be put into the random pool for a lawsuit it has to download a whole MP3 file or a full chunk of a larger album or discography archive (if they even monitor thise). Since their equipment is network-universal, they pay no attention to userhashes or even Emule’s Secure-Ident protocol (Emule clients only not part of ED2K). IP blockers are defenseless against a private investigator or FBI investigator targeting you as an individual or as a member of a small group.

  • Blue-Ray Sucks.com (They Dis HD-DVD too).
  • Blu-ray, HD DVD DRM busted
  • I don’t think i will buy any legal Blue-Ray Movies. I will just download the pirated cracked versions off of Emule. The exploit in the third article is crude and not a true crack but it could be used to rip a whole move. I would want at most two steps (rip/DCSS/concatinate to a single MPeg2 then encode to xvid) for ripping. One step on-the-fly is better (MP3). They do have one-step on-the-fly ripping and encoding for the DVDs but the audio is choppy on the XVID so you still have to use the two-step method.

  • I’m using Emule anyway. I don’t care if you’re picking up stray broadcasts (though it may be different if they are intentional). If you hate it so much, launch your nukes, but you can be assured you puny little island will become cratered radioactive glass in the retaliation (if at least some of them make it through launh and detonate on arrival / are not rusted out duds). Cubans are downloading pirated Moviez and Bookz from all over the world on Emule on their black-market internet connections. If you don’t like, go nuke america, nuke the world, or go massacre your own people, or just eat it and accept the invading freedom. And thats the same for Tunisia, Iran, China, Zimbabwe, and other tyrannical african and southeast asian goverments. Cuba bans all internet usage and computer ownership for its citizens. Internet is limited to tourists in monitored cyber-cafes, goverment officials, and goverment-favorees. Computer equipment is limited to goverment officials and certain communist-run organizations.

  • Thats nice. Force me to pay for proprietary crap and DRM as a part of my new car. At least Honda hasn’t bought into it yet. At least an IPOD can at least will play DRM-cracked AC-3 and plain MP3 files. I will never buy from Itunes. Hopefully they won’t charge a fortune for it if the car maker leaves it as an option. Generic laptop-hard drive USB-OTG MP3 players are really cheap. That’s what I prefer to buy.

  • ZDNet - Vista hacked at Black Hat
  • They hacked around the unsigned driver filter of Windows Vista? Who cares??? It costs $20,000 plus and requires a crapload of red tape to get a driver signed. I’d rather hack. If they plug this hole, another will be found or created, as there is more than just hardcore crinimal motivation to crack this. Microsoft is doing this ’security’ for the ’signing’ licensing money than actual security. The security part is just a coincidence and a part of their propaganda program to get more $20,000-$100,000 driver signing clients.

Don’t use Emule in the Spokane hotzone because the because both you and the police are in the same dynamic IP pool, and thus the entire spokane hotzone is on BlueTack’s blacklist and you will loose connectivity with about a third of the Emule clients (Yes only a quarter to a third of Emule Users have populated IP-blocklists and only a fraction of that keeps it up to date). Plus Its a Low-ID (no incoming connections), bad for releasers but only a nuisances for leechers. A $2 daily / $10 weekly access fee and a 100MB per day bandwidth limit (though I can easily go over this without Emule) may be reasonable for a subsidized Wi-Fi.

  • WGA is a load of crap. Windoze from Emule with integrated keygens and activation cracks passes WGA. So if M$ tagged you as a pirate, go download windoze XP from Emule and you become a real pirate, but not tagged! I don’t remember which of the arhives do this though. It is possible that the activation crack can ‘crack’ WGA too, but its probably just a keygen that produces keys that match the windows licensing category and license package (if VLK).

  • Wikipedia is already pretty good. I won’t want to give up the free-for-all environment for ‘britannica quality’. A lot of the science articles go far more hardcore than Encyclopedia Britinnica will ever go. If there was a BPAA that was as nasty of the RIAA, WikiPedia would be getting sued already because with or without copyright infringement, it makes me want to buy less science books because I just don’t need them no more :) Its better just to donate to the Wikipedia.

  • Asbury & Park Press - HS football player dies of heat stroke
  • Drugs……Probably stimulants - Caffein pills (no-doz), Meth, Cocaine, Crack, Aphedra, or other like herbal stimulants. Dieuretic effect not counterbalanced by additional hydration (if possible without pissing it all out).

  • Chicago Tribune - Cops complete probe of autistic man’s death
  • Hmm… Asphyxiation…. Probably not from smothering, but from the extreme hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system made him lock up in utter tension to the point of stopping breathing. The cops were normal low-intelligence, soldier-like training-wired, power-hungery, ’subdue him now’, intimidator-type cops. They are law-enforcement soldier-drones of police-state america-becoming. There are many of these in Phoenix and Mesa. Add together autistic hyper-sensitivity, autistic temper-tantrum, and adrenaline/panic from the taser hits and pepper spray and you get what is said in the article. I think a lot of Autistic people are tasered (pepper spray probably made it worse) to death because the taser would trigger a tantrum or direct death from greatly amplifying an existing tantrum rather than subdual. Even subdued normal people are tasered excessively because the cop expects them to comply without aid rather than just sit there frozen. Cop tasers a woman’s arm and then expects her to independently put both of her arms (with one half-paralize and in excruciating pain) behind her back without aid and keeps pushing the button while she its locked up in panic until either the battery runs out, she dies, or somebody intervenes. I don’t think normal stunning devices subdue autistic (the lower the functioning level the worse) people as well as normal people, especially if they are already in a tantrum.

  • Creative Loafing - Alone in autism
  • The ‘Blake’ person in this story truly is hopeless. Might as well shoot him. The lovey agencies cost a lot of money and the parents have poor chemistry. The parents only cope out of love but there is limited connection only from brute-force love. Most parents give up with a lot less destructiveness and burden. If this guy ended up in an state-funded institution he’d be in permanent maximum security solitary confinement within months because the doctors don’t do brute-force love. If he ends up in a cheap-private or any private institution that doesn’t comprehend severe autism well, he’d be kicked out and end up in the state hospital’s max-security solitary confinement ward anyway. Most animals that function / behave at this level are quickly shot to put them out of their misery. Only a major media event or something else with the odds of winning grand prize on a scrather-lotto would save this guy.

Once should consider a half-front-zip or no-string back-zip biketard (short sleeve/short legs) rather than a leotard (looks like a woman’s bathing suit - only enough to cover the crotch) for preventing him from eating his feces out of his diaper. I think any type of leotard on a guy looks disgusting. A microfiber/lycra material may be much more comfortable than more typical nylon/lycra or cotten/lycra especially with sweat, urine, or diarrhea. I assume the diaper is being worn over the leotard because of its skin-tight fit, otherwise it would be very uncomfortable (skin-tight outifits such as wetsuits or the lycra-suits worn underneith for comfort are very comfortable if it fits, otherwise it is not comfortable at all), then again, so is the feces that would probably smear up into his back.

  • Altnet’s Anti-Piracy Tool
  • Good technology. Now make a open source and P2P version. This crap is proprietary and probably expensive to licnese and the open source P2P networks will never pay to tap into it.

  • GigaOM - SkyRider, A New P2P Start Up Emerges
  • LightReading Insider - Skyrider Sees Profits in P2P
  • Commercial, non open source. I already look down on it, but might be open to it if its really good. Skype, no-way. Anything connected to Kazaa or sharman networks, especially with their hoggy, crappy, and holey P2P technology (Kazaa is a bad example on Sharman or anything close to it on the ownership hierarchy). Kazaa and Skype both have a lot of security holes, and have very poor bandwidth control ability. I would pick GigaOM over skype any day. You may want to look at IP2P also. Warez P2P version 3.x is licensing this P2P protocol for its filesharing (I’m sticking to Emule though).

  • Slyck - All-New Warez P2P ??C Version 3.0
  • Seemse promising. I’ll wait until War3z Pro comes out as free warez on Emule to find out. Din’t work that well with exeem. I am hopefull of it though. These guys will probably get nailed by the RIAA next. It not being open source will probably keep me from switching because I don’t want it to ‘go away’ on me.

  • Edonkey is reduced priority for the RIAA because most people who connect to an ED2K server use open-source Emule. Emule users are 90% of the users on the ED2K network. I think Shareaza, mldonkey, and Morpheus also add up to more than the number of users of Edonkey. I don’t think the RIAA has a strong case against LimeWire at all unless they promoted downloading of pirated stuff in their marketing or in the atmosphere of their web site (not third-party sites run by fans or fraudsters) at all in the past 1,3,5,7,11, or whatever the statute of limitations is.

  • The Inquirer - BitTorrent arrives for books
  • BookMooch - Free-for-all Paper-P2P Book Exchange
  • Magnatune - We are not Evil - Owned by owners of Bookmooch
  • I like this, and I don’t think there is any overlording ‘BPAA’ to sue them as regardless of piracy or no-piracy, it could hurt used (ebay) and new book sales. But then again, the books aren’t being copied by the uploader(s) either, either, but its still cool. Maybe I can donate with a printed Emule-downloaded PDF :) Or just send a donkey link or email the PDF or CHM or DJVU :) Then I can send both wanted AND unwanted books as I don’t have that many unwanted books that will be popular (dud bargain books) :) For the rest I just don’t want to give up my copy, and even for the unwanted books, i could donate multiple copies because computers are cheap universal factories that are unfortunately limited to information and data. Wait until them Star-Trek replicators come out in a few centuries though he he… or even just nanofacs. Then even paper-books can be pirated for free too :) And toy gadgets too :)

  • P2PNet - Super-fast content delivery
  • PC-Pro - BitTorrent aims to speed streams
  • This looks cool. Many Emule mods integrate webcache technology. The caches have to be able to speak on the emule source exchange protocol though and don’t work on other ED2k clients (Edonkey, MLDonkey, Shareaza, AMule, Morpheus, etc..). I wonder how ‘legitamit’ will be defined? A pay registry? A free registry? Or just not being on a blacklist? Most legit content will be homemade or open-source and cannot afford to pay much (or will refuse to pay anything) to have their files marked legit for BitTorrent-integrated CacheLogic-cacheing. Emule’s WebCache is indiscriminate, but has limited clientelle because it is mods only and 90% of all users on the Edonkey network are vanilla Emule users, so only 2-3% of all clients (webcache-enabled emule mods) are webcache compatible. BitTorrent/CacheLogic will take off and explode if there is no cost or hassle in getting legit content marked as such by their system. CacheLogic probably realized that caching technology has to be integrated and can’t rely solely on deep-packet sniffing as the uploader is unaware of the cache and will time-out the upload after 30 seconds (Emule) - and tell the downloader that, and the downloader will listen and terminate because, well, the RIAA likes to plant currupt files onto the P2P networks.

  • New ASUS wireless router has Bittorrent and hard drive built in
  • This looks cool. I may not use it effectivly though as I like Emule. It is a dual wired/wireless router. I think I want to get one of those without the cheap PC and hard drive embedded.
